How to Optimize a Blog for Adsense?

Posted on May 8, 2009
Category: SEO | Leave a Comment

There are plenty of people who are not quite sure on this point, and its a pretty important one if you are going to get the best from your blog and its monetization from the Adsense revenue share. So this post is a “How to Optimize a Blog for Adsense?” primer for anyone who needs a helping hand with it.

Optimizing a blog for Adsense is actually a lot more simple than a lot of people realize. There are no really hard layout or design rules you need to follow and neither are there any set methods of trying to game the system. You don’t need to because the system is actually set up for anyone with enough brain cells to get the best out of, because that’s exactly what Google wants you to do.

Think on lines of the business model for Adsense.

For the thousands of bloggers who display Adsense ads, there are equally thousands of advertisers who are spending their money to have those ads displayed in the best possible light so that they attract as many people as possible to what they’re promoting. For this to happen, they want their ads served to the most relevant sites that attract targeted traffic looking for exactly the thing they are selling.

Your job, as a blogger is to make sure that your blog is optimized for the keywords that best describe what your blog is about, so that when Google serve their ads on your site, there is a perfect match. When that happens:

So, the best way to optimize your blog is first ensure your main keywords are in the title of the blog, then in the title of each post, then are reasonably featured within the content of your post. Just be sure not to overdo it or you’ll be bordering on keyword stuffing, which is a no-no. Aim for about 2-4% keyword density and you’ll be about right.

As for ad placement, generally the best performing ads are those in the big square ad block placed just above the title of the post. Our blogs are already pre-coded to display exactly that ad block to give you the best chance of capturing the visitor’s attention with your ads, without being too in-your-face.

And that’s really about all you need to know on that score.

Make sure you write posts of a decent length, so that you can include plenty of keywords as well as long tail keywords all relative to your main keywords without it being stuffed or looking contrived. Write in a flowing style and make it interesting enough to the reader, but don’t give out every single bit of information. It helps to actually withhold some info which the visitor will either click older posts to find, or click on one of your ads to find.

One last thing. It also pays to only display the latest post on your blog’s homepage. That way if you write two posts on slightly different topics, you won’t confuse the Adsense bot as to the exact nature of your page’s info, so they’ll be sure to serve the most relevant ads.

And that’s how to optimize a blog for Adsense!

How Can I Monetize My Blog?

Posted on April 8, 2009

We’re often asked by bloggers here in the community, “how can I monetize my blog?” Well, there is no one answer to that question, but several will help. But before you even think of attempting to monetize your blog, you must build it with sufficient relevant content and acquire some backlinks in order to get it indexed and ranked by the search engines.

One you’ve done that, here are some blog monetization ideas:

If you have an Adsense account, then if your blog is sufficiently optimized for your keywords, you can easily ad it to your blog by entering your publisher id in the “Revenue Sharing” tab you’ll find in the Settings of your WP control panel.

If you have an affiliate account with eBay EPN, then similarly you can add your campaign id in the box below the one for Adsense.

You can sign up to affiliate programs such as Clickbank, Commission Junction, Linkshare, ShareASale, Pepperjam etc and promote their products on your blog. One way to do this is by writing a review of the product, include an image of it if available and post it in your blog.

If you have an account with Kontera, you can include their in-post ads simply by adding your membership id in the box in the Revenue Sharing tab, along with Adsense and EPN.

If you have your own product, such as an eBook or software that you created then you can similarly promote in on your blog. You can also promote your own merchandise such as tee shirts, clothing, arts and crafts or whatever it is that you do!

There are many options when it comes to monetizing your blog, so get creative and start making money online!

What is an Autoblog?

Posted on March 12, 2009
Category: blogs | Leave a Comment

An autoblog is one which is set up with a program that automatically syndicates RSS feeds from other blogs and posts them as individual posts. This is achieved by using certain software, or the cron job facility onĀ  a self hosted blog.

Can I set up an autoblog on my blog here at RSBC Online?

In a word, no. Because you do not have access to the cPanel or the server via ftp, you can’t create a cron job to initiate an automated RSS feed sweep. Similarly, you can’t add plug-ins that will do that programatically. In any case, this kind of blog is not really much use as far as the search engines are concerned as it only represents duplicated content from other blogs or news syndication sites.

Can I set up an RSS feed on my blog here at RSBC Online?

Yes, you can. By logging in to the WP control panel for your blog and clicking on the “design” tab, you can add an RSS widget to the sidebar which will pull in a feed from a blog that you specify. While its ok to do this, don’t do overboard with it or you’ll end up with a load of duplicate content on your site which will be detrimental to getting properly indexed and ranked by the search engines.

All in all, auto blogging is not recommended as this type of activity is seen as a form of spamming, or creating undesirable blogs for the sole purpose of trying to game the search engines, which is a practice frowned upon! Better to simply write your own posts in your own words to get the best from your blog.

Getting The Best From Your Blog

Posted on February 13, 2009
Category: blogs | Leave a Comment

People often ask me what they can do in order to get the best from their blogs. The answer can be simple or it can get quite complicated, so I think I’ll try to find some middle ground here!

First off, if depends what you expect to get from your blog and what you are using it for. If you are trying to attract readers because you feel you have something interesting to say, then your blog should be interesting to read and written on a topic that you have a good knowledge of. It shoul dalso be one that you have a lot of interest in, as it can be hard writing about something that you’re not interested in!

If you want to use your blog as a personal diary that you are prepared to alllow friends and family read, then of course, keep it personal but don’t go divulging information that you wouldn’t want just anyone reading. Remember, your blog will find its way into the Search Engines index and the general public will be able to read it too.

If you want to make your blog a commercial venture, then you should ideally choose one subject or niche as its often called and write about what you know or have researched about it and promote individual products within the niche. You can link to affiliate programs to earn commission when a reader clicks on a link, or you can create your own online store pages using eBay.

Another way of generating some income with a blog is to combine your passion for a certain subject by writing about it and also inserting Adsense ads, which are small bocks of clickable ads served by Google, Each time a visitor to your blog clicks one of these ads, you get paid a small amount, depending upon several criteria set out by the advertiser and Google.

In all cases, you should write your own posts or articles and make them as interesting as possible. Remember, if you were a visitor to your blog, think about how you would view the written content. Ask yourself if you’d enjoy reading it and if you’d find what you just read useful, interesting or entertaining.

Lastly, on no account should you copy other people’s articles and simply duplicate them on your blog. This is theft and in breach of the owner’s copyright, so please don’t do it. In addition to this, there are articles that you can buy called PLR (public label rights) which technically allow you to reproduce them on your blog. We would also advise strongly against doing this, as eben though the content may not be stolen, it is still duplicated elsewhere and you could find yoru article appearing on a number of other blogs, meaning that you will reduce your blog’s appeal and the search engines are unlikely to index duplicated content pages.

Well, go ahead and write some great articles in your blogs and here’s wishing you every success in getting the best from your blog, what ever you choose to do with its.

Indexing Problems

Posted on December 9, 2008

In the last few days, it has come to our notice that the host site along with all subdomains (blogs) have been de-indexed from Google’s search index.

I’ve no idea why this has happened and speculation in the forum is rife. Its possible someone from outside the community is aggrieved that they cannot create a blog with registrations limited to community members only and has maliciously reported the site as spam.

Its not very nice but this kind of thing does happen from time to time. I’ve heard of other blogs and WP mu hosts having similar problems, especially where they are a closed community and someone trying to get in that can’t goes and gets all shirty and reports the site to Google simply out of spite. This is a nasty, underhand thing to do, but being realistic, it happens.

In an attempt to remedy the situation, I have contacted Google and requested a re-inclusion. Hopefully a real person will come and check the site and all your blogs out and verify that we are indeed all using this package for perfectly legitimate purposes and we’ll get back into the index.

I know this is not good news for those of you using blogs as affiliate stores with Christmas coming up as it will affect sales considerably. All I can hope is that what goes around comes around and the nasty piece of work that reported us (if that is the case) get’s what’s coming to them in kind.

So hold tight and hopefully those nice people at Google will see us for what we are and let us back in!

How Do I Create a Free Blog?

Posted on November 12, 2008
Category: blogs | Leave a Comment

First you’ll need to create a user name.

You do this yourself simply by clicking the “Create a New Blog” button on the main page the first time you visit. You’ll be asked to type in the user name you want, so make it one that you can remember. Please make it a real word or name.

Note: If we spot any usernames with a nonsensical jumble of letters and/or numbers, they will be deleted along with any blogs associated with them as this looks like sp6m.

You also need to provide a valid email address. That’s because this is where your login password will be sent. So please make sure you have access to the email address you enter and your email filters won’t block anything coming from rsbconline.com.

Once you get your password, you can log in.

From the RSBC Online homepage, click the “Create a New Blog” button to create your new blog. You’ll be asked for a URL and blog name you’d like to use. Type in a name that is relevant to the blog you are setting up, so if you want a blog about finance, call it “finance”, or something similar if that name has already been taken by someone else. You can also give the blog a title, so in this example it would be “Finance”. Your finished URL will look like this:

finance.rsbconline.com

If you feel like you want to create a second or third blog, no problem. Make sure you’re logged in and repeat the process. It’s that simple!
